The next solar eclipse
After the eclipse of August 12, 2026, the next total solar eclipse is August 2, 2027. It stays a total eclipse in the strict sense only inside a narrow path; outside that path, it is either a partial eclipse or, for large parts of the world, no eclipse at all. On August 2, 2027, a Monday, the Moon covers the Sun completely along a corridor that opens in Morocco, crosses the south of Spain, and continues through Algeria, Libya, and Egypt before reaching Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. Magnitude reaches 1.079 and totality lasts up to 6 minutes 23 seconds at the most favorable point on that path, the longest totality in this entire calendar through 2030.
Outside that corridor, the eclipse is still visible as a partial eclipse across a much larger region: Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and western and southern Asia. That region does not include North America. If you live in the continental United States or Canada, August 2, 2027 brings no eclipse at all where you are, not even a partial one. The Moon covers the Sun completely along a path through the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, magnitude 1.039, with totality lasting up to 2 minutes 18 seconds, roughly a third of the 2027 duration. Outside that path, the eclipse is visible as partial across the northern part of North America, the western edge of Africa, and Europe. As with 2027, no path of totality touches the continental United States or the UK on this date either; only Iceland and Spain fall inside the actual band of totality.

After that: the annular eclipse of January 26, 2028
Less than six months after the 2027 eclipse, the type changes. On Wednesday, January 26, 2028, the Moon is farther from Earth in its orbit and looks too small to cover the Sun completely. Instead of totality, a ring of light stays visible around the Moon's silhouette throughout the peak of the eclipse, magnitude 0.921, for up to 10 minutes 27 seconds, the longest single phase, total or annular, anywhere in this calendar. The path of annularity opens in Ecuador, crosses Peru, Brazil, and Suriname, then crosses the Atlantic to reach Spain and Portugal.
Outside that path, the partial-visibility zone is listed as eastern North America, Central and South America, western Europe, and the northwestern edge of Africa. That's the first date in this calendar where North America shows up directly in a partial-visibility zone rather than being left out entirely, worth flagging if you're on the eastern seaboard of the US or Canada. 2029: no solar eclipse for Europe, but two brush North America
The year 2029 breaks the pattern. Four partial solar eclipses happen worldwide that year, but none of them reach Europe: the lunar nodes don't line up on that side of the planet in 2029. Of the four, two touch North America and the Scandinavian Arctic, and one touches South America. Our source data doesn't break these down further by exact date or country for 2029, so we're not going to guess at specifics we can't confirm; if you're in North America, it's worth knowing that year isn't eclipse-free for you the way it is for Europe, even though this calendar can't yet give you the day-by-day detail.
For Europe and the UK, the practical result is a gap: after January 26, 2028, the next solar eclipse to reach that side of the Atlantic isn't until 2030.
Then: the annular eclipse of June 1, 2030
The calendar closes with a second annular eclipse, magnitude 0.944 and a maximum ring duration of 5 minutes 21 seconds, on Saturday, June 1, 2030. Its path doesn't return to the Iberian Peninsula: it runs through Algeria, Tunisia, Greece, Turkey, Russia, northern China, and Japan, a corridor spanning three continents. The partial-visibility zone is wider still: Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Arctic, and Alaska.
Alaska is the only piece of United States territory that appears anywhere in this five-year calendar, in the partial-visibility zone of this one date. It's still not a path of totality or annularity, only the wider partial zone, but it's the closest any of these five eclipses come to US soil directly. For the rest of the continental United States, and for the UK, June 1, 2030 is again a day with no visible eclipse at all.

The "path" is the narrow corridor where the eclipse reaches 100% totality or leaves a full ring; the "zone" is the much wider area around it where the same eclipse is only partial. Across all five dates, no path of totality or annularity crosses the continental United States or the United Kingdom. The nearest a total eclipse gets to a familiar destination for US and UK travelers is Spain, in both the 2026 and 2027 bands, and Portugal, in the 2028 band.
Total vs. annular: why it decides whether the glasses come off
Magnitude measures how much of the Sun's diameter the Moon covers at the eclipse's peak. Above 1, the Moon's disk is larger than the Sun's as seen from Earth: it can cover the Sun completely, the eclipse is total, and for a few minutes, inside the path only, it becomes safe to look up without a filter. Below 1, the Moon never quite covers the whole disk, even at the best possible alignment: a ring of light persists the entire time, the eclipse is annular, and there is no point, anywhere on Earth, where removing your glasses is safe.
That difference comes down to distance. The Moon's orbit isn't a perfect circle, so its apparent size, as seen from Earth, varies noticeably between its closest and farthest points. A total eclipse needs a relatively close Moon; an annular eclipse happens when the Moon is farther out on the date in question.
