Looking at the Sun does not hurt while it's happening. Damage shows up 4 to 12 hours later, once it's already done. That's why certification matters more than how dark something looks.
The ISO 12312-2 standard
ISO 12312-2 is the international standard for filters used to look directly at the Sun. To meet it, a filter has to transmit less than 0.0032% of visible light, an optical density of 5, roughly a 100,000-fold reduction, while also blocking ultraviolet and infrared radiation. It is the only certification that makes direct solar viewing safe, eclipsed Sun or not. A "CE" mark on its own is not enough: look specifically for "ISO 12312-2" printed on the frame or the packaging.

How to verify a pair before you trust it

Why each check matters
The indoor test works because a genuine ISO 12312-2 filter blocks essentially all ordinary light: if you can make out furniture, a window, or a lamp at normal brightness, the filter is not dense enough for solar use, certification sticker or not.
The outdoor test works the other way around: a correctly rated filter renders the Sun as a soft, well-defined disk, not a painfully bright glare and not something you can barely see at all. Either extreme is a reason to stop and check the marking again before using the pair.
What does NOT protect your eyes during an eclipse
All of these circulate as "solutions" before every eclipse. All of them let infrared through, the part of the spectrum that burns without any glare to warn you.

The pattern across all of these: they cut visible glare, which switches off the natural blink-and-look-away reflex, without blocking the radiation that actually damages the retina. That makes them more dangerous than using nothing at all, because they make it possible to stare at the Sun for far longer than instinct would otherwise allow.
Why the burn doesn't hurt
The retina has no pain receptors. Solar retinopathy, the technical name for this kind of burn, happens with zero warning signal: no heat, no sting, nothing that tells you to look away. Symptoms appear 4 to 12 hours after exposure, often that same evening or the next morning: a dark or blurry spot at the center of your vision, straight lines that look wavy, washed-out colors, trouble reading fine print. Some of this damage fades over weeks or months; some of it is permanent.
Hospitals see a predictable spike in solar retinopathy cases after every major eclipse. It was documented after the 1999 total eclipse across Europe, and again after the 2017 and 2024 total eclipses in the United States. The pattern repeats because a partial eclipse feels safer than it is: as the visible glare drops, your pupil dilates and the reflex that normally forces you to look away weakens, right as the still-shining crescent keeps emitting the same damaging flux it always does.
A dark or blurry spot, wavy lines, or faded colors after watching an eclipse: see an ophthalmologist promptly and mention the exposure, even without pain and even a day later.
Never look through an instrument, even with eclipse glasses on
Binoculars, a telescope, or a camera's optical viewfinder concentrate sunlight the way a magnifying glass concentrates it on paper. Pointed at the Sun, that concentrated beam melts an eclipse-glasses-grade filter and reaches the eye in a fraction of a second, glasses or not. The only safe way to use an instrument on the Sun is a dedicated solar filter mounted at the front of it, facing the Sun, never at the eyepiece.
Five rules for the day of an eclipse
Glasses on before you look up
Put the glasses on while looking down at the ground, then raise your head. To take them off, lower your head first, then remove them.
Short sessions
One to three minutes at a time, then a break. A partial eclipse runs for an hour or more; there's no need to rush or stare continuously.
Children under direct supervision
One adult per child, an adjustable frame rather than flat cardboard where possible, and projection methods as a backup for the youngest.
Never with an optical instrument
No binoculars, telescope, or camera viewfinder, with or without eclipse glasses, unless a proper solar filter is mounted at the front of the instrument.
Rule five: check the glasses before you use them
ISO 12312-2 marking present, filter intact with no scratches or pinholes, and the pair is under three years old. Skip this check and the other four rules don't matter.
How to watch without any glasses at all
Indirect observation is 100% safe: you keep your back to the Sun and look at its projected image instead. Ideal for groups and for young children.
Pinhole projector
Punch a 1-2mm hole in a piece of cardboard with a pin or a compass point. With your back to the Sun, let light pass through the hole onto a white sheet held 50cm to 1m behind it. The small bright disk is a real image of the Sun; during the eclipse, you'll see the crescent form inside it. Image size grows roughly 1cm per meter of distance.
Kitchen colander
Every hole in a colander or slotted spoon acts as its own pinhole. Held at shoulder height with your back to the Sun, it projects dozens of small crescents onto the ground or a light sheet. Works instantly with kids, no materials to buy. Leaves under a tree do the same thing naturally.
Binocular projection
Mount binoculars on a tripod, objective lenses toward the Sun, without ever looking through the eyepiece. Hold a white card 30-50cm behind the eyepiece to catch a large, detailed projected image, sunspots included. Never let a child near the eyepiece, and pause regularly since the concentrated heat warms the optics.
Pocket mirror
A small flat mirror, or a mirror covered by cardboard with a 5mm hole, reflects an image of the Sun onto a shaded wall 5-10m away, showing the eclipse's crescent. Never point the reflection at anyone's face. Simple, and effective on any light-colored façade.
Where to buy, and how to avoid counterfeits

Handed-down or borrowed glasses deserve the same scrutiny as a new purchase. Re-run the indoor and outdoor checks regardless of who gave them to you or how confident they were about the pair.
